How to Stay Safe and Avoid Common Winter Injuries

Written By PTConcepts on February 7, 2020

winter slip and fall injuryLiving in Texas, you don’t have to contend with daily snow like your friends in northern states.

However, that doesn’t mean people living in Frisco, McKinney, Allen, and Plano aren’t at risk for certain winter injuries.

Ice can accumulate unexpectedly overnight. Stepping outside the door onto a slick driveway can have devastating consequences for people of all ages.

How to Avoid Common Winter Injuries

Simple slip and fall accidents can be debilitating – particularly for elderly folks. According to the CDC, over 30 thousand older adults die from falls each year. For every five falls, at least one will result in a severe injury such as a hip fracture or head injury.

Accidents happen but you can protect yourself and loved ones by following a few tips to prevent injuries while there’s ice outside.

  • Wear shoes and boots specially designed for ice and snow
  • Shorten your stride and avoid wide steps
  • Move slow – don’t run outdoors
  • Keep salt or de-ice next to your door and inside your car
  • Always have a cell phone within reach in case of an injury
  • Take your time with outdoor chores and stay inside as much as possible

Safety comes first. Arriving late is better than never arriving at all because you slipped and hurt your back – or worse.
