Sports Injury

Here in North Texas, the mild winter temperatures allow us to enjoy all sorts of outdoor sports year-round. Regular exercise is crucial for preventing a range of chronic health problems and maintaining good overall health. Plus, team sports in particular offer opportunities for socialization. No matter what your preferred sport is, you may develop an acute or repetitive strain injury from time to time. Visit PTConcepts in North Texas for personalized, evidence-based sports rehabilitation programs from our skilled physical therapists.

Elbow Injuries

We often treat elbow injuries in patients who play racket sports like tennis, but they can also affect golfers, baseball players, and volleyball enthusiasts. Some of the most common sports-related elbow injuries are as follows:

  • Elbow Tendinitis – Tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow refers to elbow tendinitis. This is the inflammation of a tendon in the elbow. It can occur from repetitive strain or an acute injury.
  • UCL Injury – The UCL is the ulnar collateral ligament. An injury to the UCL is often caused by overhead movement, such as when playing volleyball or throwing a baseball. A UCL tear can occur gradually or suddenly.
  • Olecranon Stress Fracture – If the muscles of the elbow weaken, they have trouble absorbing shock. The shock is passed along to the bone, which can result in a stress fracture.

Knee Injuries

Knee injuries are quite common among sports enthusiasts, as the knees must absorb a lot of the shock from movements like running and jumping. Some of the knee injuries we commonly treat include the following:

  • ACL Tear – A tear in the anterior cruciate ligament often occurs in athletes who play sports that require sudden pivots or changes in direction, like football, basketball, and soccer.
  • Meniscal Tear – Pivoting or sudden impacts can result in a tear of the meniscus, which is cartilage that cushions the joint.

Ankle Injuries

Some ankle injuries heal relatively quickly, while others may require an extended rehab program over months. Our physical therapists can treat the following:

  • Ankle Sprain – This results from the stretching or tearing of a ligament in the ankle.
  • Tendinitis – Tendinitis of the ankle is an overuse injury characterized by inflammation.
  • Stress Fracture – A stress fracture in the ankle is also often the result of repetitive strain over a period of time.
