How Does Dry Needling Work and Is It Right for Me?

Dry Needling

Physical therapists and other specially trained clinicians can use dry needling to treat patients with movement problems and musculoskeletal pain. At PTConcepts, we often recommend dry needling to our patients in North Texas as part of an overall pain management and physical rehabilitation plan. It’s an advanced technique that requires little to no downtime.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

If you have pain in a certain area, such as your neck, you may have noticed that certain spots are particularly tender to the touch. These may be trigger points, which are painful “knots” in the soft tissues that can develop after repetitive stress or an acute injury.

When we perform dry needling, we insert a sterile, very thin filiform needle into the knot. This causes a twitch response, causing the release of the trigger point and forcing the muscle to relax. No medication is used. The insertion of the needle itself is sufficient to provoke the healing response.

It’s sometimes thought that dry needling is like acupuncture. However, they are two different treatment modalities. Whereas acupuncture needles are inserted into strategic places in the body for the purpose of unblocking meridian lines, or energy lines, dry needles go directly into an area of soft tissue tightness.
