If you’re an athlete, you’ve probably heard about hamstring strains before. Whether your coach is constantly reminding you to stretch before you hit the field or you’ve watched one of your teammates be forced to sit out for the season, you know that a hamstring strain can throw a wrench in your plans. With our expert physical therapy services at PTConcepts in Texas, you can begin to heal from the inside out.

What is a hamstring strain?

Your hamstring muscle area is made up of three tendons: the semitendinosus, the semimembranosus, and the biceps femoris. A hamstring strain occurs when one or more of these tendons is torn. Whether it is a full or partial tear, this type of strain can severely impact your range of motion on the gridiron or the track. Research shows that any type of hamstring strain is likely to cause another injury in the future.

Athletes, especially football players, are the most at risk for suffering a hamstring strain, although it can also happen to people with active jobs in fields like construction or maintenance.

What are the causes of a hamstring strain?

A hamstring strain occurs when excessive force is applied to a tendon while the muscle is being stretched. Sports that require sprinting and agility, such as football and gymnastics, often involve movements of this nature. If your muscles are not properly warmed up before you begin exercising, you have an increased likelihood of pulling a muscle. Other risk factors include muscle fatigue, poor flexibility, and aging.

How can physical therapy at PTConcepts help my injury?

Physical therapy is a drug-free and non-invasive method of healing hamstring strains. Your physical therapist at PTConcepts will work with you to determine the most helpful exercises and muscle training for your specific condition. We use a wide variety of techniques to help you recover, including dry needling with or without electrical stimulation, active release technique (ART), instrument assisted soft tissue techniques like Graston and FAKTR, cupping, a zero gravity treadmill, blood flow restriction techniques and more.

You will improve your range of motion, flexibility, and strength to support your injured muscle. With proper training and education, you can alleviate the effects of your hamstring strain and get back to doing what you love.
